Robin Allender — In The Grip of Light
Release date: 26th May, 2008
The Allender Band’s debut EP, In the Grip of Light consists of rearranged versions of two songs from The Bird and the Word and two new songs written together with the band.
“A really interesting sound … Allender is an extraordinary guitar player” — Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2
The EP moves away from the acoustic-based folk of The Bird and the Word towards a more expansive sound. While still featuring Allender’s hushed vocal delivery and unusual, poetic lyrics, In the Grip of Light also contains elements of rock, gothic country and experimental indie. The EP’s lush, spacious melodicism recalls Red House Painters, while its subtle, dynamic arrangements show the influence of post-rock figureheads Talk Talk and The For Carnation.
Like The Bird and the Word, In the Grip of Light is centred around Allender’s unique, intricately detailed guitar playing which interplays brilliantly with Wilkins’s equally distinctive approach. The chiming guitar harmonies of ‘Green Wound’ recall Johnny Marr, while the country-tinged phrasing in ‘The Bower’ is suggestive of jazz guitarist Bill Frisell’s explorations of bluegrass and modern American folk music.
